Samadhi Music Festival 7007

Monday, October 8th, 2007

Sam

MUSIKEROS of Davao — veterans and newbies — will gather this Wednesday
for the first anniversary of the city’s biggest musician group, the
Samahan ng mga Musikeros sa Davao, Inc (Samadhi).

A motorcade around the city’s major streets will start by 3 pm at
Magsaysay Park, and will end at Matina Town Square where the musicians
perform at Taboan until midnight.

Titled Samadhi Music Festival 7007, the event will go down to the
memory lane as it will pay tribute to the artists in the 70’s who
started to pop up the music scene in Davao up to newest crop of
musicians of 2007. And with the theme “Davao: Clean Air, Simple Living;
Clean Music, High Thinking,” the event also shows the stand of Samadhi
for environment protection and against drug use.

Samadhi president Arnolfo “Noli” Bencio is inviting all the musikeros —
“performing and non-performing, active and still, the haves and the
have-nots, young and aging, listeners and jammers” — for the so-called
grand reunion of musicians.

Samadhi was formed April last year and was officially launched August
of that year. But the group picked October 10 to celebrate its
anniversary since it was on October 10, 2006 that the Securities and
Exchange Commission formally approved its legal existence.

From a core group of less than a dozen a year ago, Samadhi has
currently more than 200 members — most of them are performers in
various entertainment circuits in Davao City.

Bencio — vocalist of Positive Madness who already traveled and
performed in several Asian, European and American countries — initiated
the creation of the group to unify all the musicians in Davao after
noting the lack of support given to the local players in the industry.

Aiming to promote the safety, welfare, development and progress of
every musician in the region, Samadhi is presently working for health
and medical assistance, insurance, mortuary, and other benefit for the
working musicians. The group aims to form a cooperative that will take
livelihood workshops for its members and family.

For the previous year, Samadhi has conducted a free medical/dental
clinic, food relief, distribution of Philhealth cards, and tree
planting activities. They have sought accreditation from the Department
of Social Welfare and Development, City Tourism Office, and City
Council.

They have also done a number of benefit concerts. The latest was “Save
Me: Teach Your Children” where the city’s best children-musicians
performed for the less-fortunate and abused children.

As part of their social commitment, the group is preparing to hold a
music workshop to street children who have interest in music. The
workshop aims to help the children stay away from drugs and be a
productive citizen who in the future may become a popular musician here
and abroad.

This Wednesday, the grand event will start at Magsaysay Park at 3 pm
for the motorcade. The route will be at Uyanguren, Ponciano, Bolton,
San Pedro, Magallanes, Bolton Bridge, Sandawa, McArthur Highway and go
directly to MTS.

The event will feature who’s who in the local music scene. “Everybody
who wants to perform is free to show their talents,” Bencio said.

Aside from giving tributes to personalities who have contributed to the
local music scene, a special lifetime achievement award will be given
to Ernesto “Erning” Alba, the patriarch of the famous Alba musical
clan.

An exhibit of old photographs of Davao musicians will also highlight
the affair. The old pictures will be used in the upcoming book, Samadhi
Rising, which will chronicle the birth of music in Davao until the
present era.

UKB aims to serve, not to compete

Monday, October 8th, 2007

IT’S not about competition. It’s about giving Davaoeños the choice.
Hosts of GMA’s Una Ka Bai!, Davao’s newest TV show, claimed they are no way competing with their rival show, the much established Maayong Buntag Mindanao, in the morning spot.
The daily morning infortainment show Una Ka Ba! starts on Monday at 6:00 am. Competitions between the two morning shows are expected by televiewers.
In yesterday’s informal talk where the hosts were bombarded with questions on "competition" issue by Davao entertainment/lifestyle journalists, the trio of Derf Maiz, Sarah Hilomen and Mary Ken Sobrecarey, however, said their show can surely give a good fight in the rating game.
"We are giving them (the viewers) the choice," said Hilomen, who expressed her respect to the 12-year-old MBM as the longest-running shows in Davao. "Our purpose is to give information (and) service."
Cel Amores, GMA regional news and public affairs program manager, said the new show will give local flavor in their morning show.
Amores said the Kapuso show is not in direct head-to-head competition to MBM since Una Ka Bai! will start earlier than it rival local show. MBM usually starts around 6:30 am.
Una Ka Bai! will take the 6 am news segment of Unang Hirit. Amores admitted that the rating of UH is not high in Davao. UH is the top early morning show in Metro Manila.
Earlier, the Kapamilya Network said it welcome the new morning show in the rival stations.

Palad brods get canned segment in Una Ka Bai!

Monday, October 8th, 2007

THE entertaining singing Palad Brothers will only get a canned MTV-like segment in Una Ka Bai!, Davao’s newest early morning show which will debut at 6 am today over GMA5 Davao.
Cel Amores, GMA regional news and public affairs program manager, said it is not feasible for the two children to appear live in the early morning show.
“Daghang bawal sa mga bata,” Amores told reporters in an informal talk promoting the show.
She said the 6 am schedule is a factor since it is too early for the children to the studio.
Amores said the segment of the two brothers will be like a music video where they will perform their songs.
UKB, she said, is planning to tap the Palad Brothers in other upcoming segments intended for the children, like giving tips to young pupils and other feel-good segments for the kids.
“But for now, we will initially maximize on their musicality,” Amores said.
The Una Ka Bai! executive also said they are willing to extend help to other artists in Davao City.
She said they may make a portion intended to local musicians where they can perform their original songs.
“Maybe a minute in the opening or closing segment,” Amores said.
She said the UKB theme song is actually composed and performed by a local guy named Phillip Jude “Yaku” Maranan.
“I have a strong belief that Yaku will become popular,” Amores said.
UKB, she said, will also take the challenge to localize stories in its entertainment news segment.
GMA’s afternoon news program Testigo is usually running news about Kapuso stars in Manila stars. Most of the materials are often rehash from other national entertainment shows of the Kapuso network.
The GMA Davao show will be hosted by Derf Maiz, Sarah Hilomen and Mary Ken Sobrecarey.
The 24-year old Derf was selected as the lead male host after he bested the other Testigo reporters in their audition – the live coverage during the Kadayawan festival last August.
Derf started his media work with GMA Davao even before he earned his mass communication diploma from Holy Cross of Davao College. He was an intern with GMA during his college days. He was also trained at Mindanao TIMES during his intern days.
The 27-year-old Sarah applied for various positions in GMA. The UP-Los Baños grad from Tagum City joined in QTV’s reality show May Trabaho Ka seeking for a newscaster spot. She emerged in the top 5 among the several applicants, and got approval from GMA veteran broadcasters like Mike Enriquez, Mel Tiangco, and Arnold Clavio.
Mary Ken, the 19-year-old HRM student of University of Mindanao, passed the audition held few months ago for the position. She is a commercial model.

DAVAO’s world-renown choir, the Himig Singers, will represent
Philippines in the 1st Asian Choir Games - the Asia Pacific Olympics
for choirs - in Indonesia.

The competition is the largest international event for amateur and professional choirs in Asia.

Himig’s Arnold Alindada said the group will be competing on Nov. 2 - 10, in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia.

The 1st Asian Choir Games 2007 in Jakarta will be a great gathering of
choirs from all parts of the Asian Pacific Area. Choirs are competing
in 21 different categories according to age, voicing and different
music genres. Thousands of participants from many nations will perform
in the modern “JI Jakarta International Expo” Centre and will turn
Jakarta into the centre of the Asia Pacific choir music for some days.

Members of the Himig Singers were in the city council yesterday to ask
for financial assistance to shoulder their fare. They performed before
the council.

Himig was founded by Rey Alan Lacuin in 1988 and has since reaped awards here and abroad.

After winning twice in the National Music Competitions for Young
Artists (NAMCYA), the most prestigious musical competitions in the
Philippines, the group toured in various continents.

The group toured Germany and the Czech Republic in 1995, won a couple
of competitions in Austria, Spain and Italy in 1997, crisscrossed the
North American continent in 1999, and celebrated the millennium with an
8-month extended concert tour of the US and Canada. The group has been
given an award for community service by the University of Mindanao for
facilitating seminars and workshops to improve conducting and choir
skills locally. The city of Davao has also appointed the Singers
official cultural ambassadors of goodwill in an ordinance made
effective in 1997.

Last September 19, the group performed at the Malacanang Palace during
the signing of agreement between the Philippine Government and the
United States United States Agency for International Development
(USAID) for Mindanao Peace Development. Present during the said event
was Pres. Gloria Arroyo, US Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney, Dir. Jon
Lindborg (USAID Mission Director), Sec. Jess Dureza (Presidential
Adviser for Peace Process in Mindanao), and Sec. Virgilio Leyretana
(Mindanao Economic and Development Council Chairperson).

SM Little Stars Davao selected

Monday, October 1st, 2007

9sm2
A five-year-old look-alike of Aga Muhlach and a six-year-old Swiss-Filipina emerged as winners in the regional finals of SM Little Stars held at the entertainment center of SM City Davao last Saturday.
The pair of David James Dimalanta and Cassandra Venuti will represent Davao in the October 20 finals of the first SM Little Stars nationwide competition to be held at the SM Mall of Asia.
Each winner took home P12,000-worth of cash, toys, gift and other incentives.
Ten lovely children competed Saturday and were judged by ABS-CBN Davao manager Trisha Corpus, topnotch fashion designer Aztec Barba, and event organizer Marissa Te Eng Foo. Hundreds joined in the audition.
David James is under home study with the Catholic Filipino Academy of Bo Sanchez of Manila.
He is the second in the four children of Rodelio and Chartreuese. His father is a nurse who is currently working in America, while his mother is an executive of the caregiver school Integrated Learning Institute, a local partner of the Australia-based Charlton Brown.
9sm3_1
Cassandra, the youngest and only girl among the three siblings, is a level 3 nursery pupil of Center for Brighter Beginnings in Doña Vicente in Bajada.
Her parents, Davao-based Swiss father Romano and mother Rochelle, are into restaurant business.
In the one-minute talent segment, the shy Cassandra performed a ballet number, while the extrovert David modeled on the ramp.
Cassandra is studying ballet at the Royal Academy of Davao.
David’s mother said the boy can sing and dance, but they preferred him to do the walk considering the allotted time was very minimal.
The boy’s proud mother said David’s over-confidence is a plus factor.
David said he wants to be a basketball player, but also likes to become an actor just like his dead-ringer Aga Muhlach.
Rounding up the runners-up were Little Andrei Cañete and Lynelle Anne Partoza (Shining Angels), Anthony Noel and Danica Ann Miranda (Brightest Angels), Funkee Lloyd Otero and Lillie Allen (Cheerful Angels), and Stefano Ryan Espina and Sophia Roxan (Friendly Angels).
The SM Little Stars competition has its roots in SM Supermalls in Xiamen, Jin Jiang, and Cheng Du, China.
In its original form, it was a talent show for every area, and each area would have one winning Little Star. The Little Star project proved to be very successful in
China, and initiative was taken to adapt it to the Philippine context.
The Philippine Little Star competition has evolved into a national contest, involving all SM Supermalls.
It aims at finding the brightest, shining little kids that will be named as “Little Stars.” The competition itself is not strictly a formal beauty pageant or talent show, but a fun opportunity to showcase a child’s natural charm, wit and, yes, talent.
An SM Little Star is well-rounded, fun-loving kid willing to have fun and show other people his or her style.

Palad Brothers to join ‘Una Ka Bai’

THE
singing Agdao junkyard kids will soon become certified Kapuso stars.

While GMA
Davao has yet to announce the names of personalities set to host its upcoming
early morning magazine show, the talented Palad Brothers are the first act to be in as
cast-members of the show.

The
entertaining tandem of the serious Dariel John "John-John" and the
wacky Jundrel "Jun-Jun" will become regulars of the Kapuso show Una
Ka Bai
, talent discoverer John Paul "JP" Seniel told the crowd
during the Teach Your Children benefit show organized by the Samahan ng mga
Musikeros sa Davao, Inc. (Samadhi) last Sunday night at Matina Town Square.

Seniel,
reporter of the GMA afternoon news show Testigo, told TIMES that the
team managing them is already processing the working papers of the two boys.

The
brothers rocked the Taboan of MTS in the first ever major concert they
participated in. Other children-musicians in the city also performed in the
show.

Fellow
musicians and the audience were wowed by the performance of John-John, 8, and
younger brother Jun-Jun, 7.

The two
children were the most applauded performers during the event. The children got
a royal treatment from the not-so-very-appreciative MTS crowd.

The Palad
Brothers were the first local act to have the spectators with camera to crowd
below the stage to take photos of the children. Such practice is oftentimes
only experienced by performers from Manila.

Seniel,
an award-winning short-film director, is also doing a documentary of the two
children for a theatrical release.

Seniel
discovered the two children just outside the Sta. Police Station in the evening
of Sept. 4 while the two kids were serenading by-passers for alms.

Since
Seniel featured the two in Testigo, offers and donations pour in to the
poor but musically-gifted children.
